The AI-vs-advisor debate has it backwards

Issue 02 · Biweekly · July 27, 2026

Every other headline this year says the same thing: AI is coming for your financial advisor. Robo-advisors, autonomous agents, "why pay 1% when a chatbot is free."

The argument already has its cleanest test case. Back in April, Range, a Google-backed RIA, reiterated its plan to replace most of its two-dozen-plus human advisors with in-house AI — having hired them, by the company’s own account, partly as “training material” to learn what makes a good advisor good. Michael Kitces and Ben Henry-Moreland’s read is that Range will struggle to hold premium fees and the 95–98% retention the industry runs on once the humans are gone, because a client prices a relationship differently than they price software.

It's the wrong question.

AI isn't going to replace good advisors. It's going to delete the part of the job that was never the point — the data gathering, the report assembly, the spreadsheet reconciliation — and hand those hours back to the work only a human can do. The advisors who lean into it won't be replaced. They'll be faster, more responsive, more dynamic, and in many cases more affordable.

Here's what that already looks like.

Three ways AI is supercharging advisors right now

  • Meeting prep. What used to be an analyst spending half a day pulling statements and building a pre-meeting brief now takes minutes. AI assembles the full picture, flags what changed since last quarter, and drafts the agenda — so your advisor walks in already knowing where to focus.

  • Reporting. Performance, tax, and net-worth reports that were built by hand — quarterly, if you were lucky — are now generated on demand, personalized, and current. Less waiting, fewer errors, more transparency.

  • Rebalancing and trade mechanics. Tax-aware rebalancing and model-portfolio tools handle the mechanics at the custodian — flagging harvest windows, keeping allocations on target — while the advisor sets the strategy. The judgment stays human; the busywork doesn't.

The through-line: AI is eating the busywork, not the advice. And when a practice spends less time on overhead, that efficiency starts to show up where it matters to you — faster answers, more proactive outreach, and, over time, potentially a lower cost to work with a great advisor.

The part AI will never do

Here's what the "chatbot will replace your advisor" crowd misses: the biggest driver of your long-term results isn't fund selection. It's behavior.

It's not panic-selling in the drawdown. Not letting one winning stock quietly become 40% of your net worth. Not talking yourself into the second home right before a capital call. Those are the decisions that make or break a plan — and they're emotional, not mathematical.

A good advisor is, above all, a behavioral coach. They know your history and your fears. They're the call you make before you do something you'll regret. AI can surface the flag — "you're overexposed here" — but a human is what helps you sit with it, understand it, and act. Advisors don't just manage money; they help you build a healthier relationship with it. That's emotional intelligence, and it doesn't come from a model.

Where Formation fits

None of this works if your financial life is scattered across a dozen logins. Formation gives you — and, when you choose, your advisor, CPA, or attorney, each with their own sign-in and your visibility controls — one cited, entity-organized picture of everything. AURA, our education-only AI, turns that complexity into clear, sourced answers.

AURA surfacing what’s worth a decision, in a sample household. Every figure carries its own CALC / EST provenance, and AURA proposes — it never executes.

So whether you're fully self-directed or you work with a pro, the conversation is about your decisions, not data cleanup. And if you'd like a professional and don't have one, we can introduce you to an independent advisor who works for you.

Formation isn't your advisor and never moves your money — AURA is educational, not personalized advice. That guardrail is exactly what lets it sit beside a great human one.

The future of advice isn't AI or your advisor. It's your advisor, with AI, working from a picture you both trust.

Formation is now on your phone

The iOS app went live on the App Store this morning. Android has been on Google Play since earlier this month. Both are included with your membership — there is nothing extra to buy.

AURA and your net worth, entity-organized, in a sam

This is not the dashboard shrunk down. It is the part of your financial life that needs to be reachable in ninety seconds:

  • Net worth on your home screen. An iOS widget that refreshes without opening the app. Glance instead of logging in.

  • Alerts that come to you. Push notifications on five triggers: a connection goes stale, a budget crosses its target, an unusually large charge posts, a vest window opens inside two weeks, or net worth moves past your threshold. These read data Formation already has — they never trigger a paid refresh on your behalf.

  • AURA, in your pocket. The same education-only assistant, the same citations, the same entity-aware picture. Ask it something from a parking lot and you get the answer you would have gotten at your desk.

  • Statements by camera. Photograph a statement and it lands in your Document Vault, parsed, without a scanner or a desktop.

Everything that touches your accounts stays read-only. Formation still never moves money.

Give a month, get a month

If Formation has earned a place in your week, the most useful thing you can do is hand it to someone carrying the same problem.

Your invite link lives on your Profile page. When someone joins through it and makes their first payment, $17.99 — one month of the membership — is credited to both accounts. No codes, nothing to redeem, nothing to claim.

Where to find your link: open the avatar menu in the top right of the dashboard and choose Invite a friend. It drops you on your Profile, scrolled to the “Give a month, get a month” card — your link, your stats, and one-tap copy for text, email, X, or LinkedIn.
